It's So Much More Than Football
I've always been a football fan, but it wasn't until Adam Hastings joined Providence Day School as our head coach that I really started to see the true impact it has on the lives of our young men. Today, while listening to Adam reflect on this past season, I was inspired to share with others some of the lessons he teaches our players. We all know football is a sport that requires great physical endurance and skill. But, the life lessons Coach Hastings teaches are going to stay with our players forever. He and his staff have worked so hard to create a culture of caring. This culture is one where the players spend time together on and off the field because they want to. They aren't hanging out in the locker room before and after practice because it's the most comfortable place on campus, it's because they genuinely care about each other. In a world where so many people are trying to get ahead of everyone else, Coach Hastings teaches our young men about the "WE" in our team. He inspires our players to go out and play hard every single down because their teammates are counting on someone always having their back. Yes, winning is always a fantastic feeling, but that's not what stays with you for years and years to come. It's not what helps you get through the tough times you will face in life. Coach Hastings talks to his players, especially those who face injuries, about how, as adults, they will persevere though the difficult times because they've already learned how to get through the tough times. They've already learned to rely on others to help them, a life lesson that we all need to remember sometimes. He tells his players he will always be there when they need something, no matter how long its been or how far away they are from PD and I know he will be. He makes players want to play for him and his staff because they are inspired by his encouragement and the positive mindset he instills in his team. While some of you may not like the physicality of the sport, I encourage you to take some time to learn about our program at Providence Day School because it's so much more than football. It's about inspiring young men to become the best they can be both on and off the field. And even more, it's about teaching them how to inspire those around them.
