Honoring the Past & Embracing the Future
I know I’m a very lucky Charger…as a Class of 1997 alumna, as a proud parent of a 3rd grader, and as an employee who gets to work in one of the most beautiful spaces on campus – the Thompson-Jones Library! There are so many wonderful things to witness and be inspired by in the PD Library! You’ll see wide-eyed TK-ers curiously browsing the library for new books to read. You’ll see bright, excited middle and upper school students working on projects together in collaborative spaces. You’ll see the new, world-class technology recently installed in the King Room.
What you may not see though is a hidden gem, housed upstairs in the Thompson-Jones Library. Tucked away, behind the Global Studies offices, is a small room that tells a BIG story…the story of Providence Day School. In this room you’ll find many PD memories, dating back to the 1970s, in the form of yearbooks, letter jackets, old school magazines, student and alumni artwork, prom invitations, athletic programs and awards, student publications, and photos from school events, field trips, and of our beloved teachers (just to name a few!). This special room on campus is where our school’s archives are kept and is distinguished by the name “Charchives.” The Charchives contain an ever-growing collection of PD memorabilia that will certainly take you down a Charger memory lane…and how appropriate for it to be housed in our library, a place stories are told and kept safe!
A particularly inspiring moment I had today occurred while I was standing in the Charchives, gazing out the window onto the construction site of what will be the new Academic Center. Perhaps this view is one of the most inspiring on campus today, as one can envision a brand new building that itself will inspire great teaching and learning. However, the reason I was visiting the Charchives was not for the view of red dirt and hard hats. It was to donate a red athletic t-shirt , circa 2014, to the archive collection. Before folding it up for storage, I read the motto displayed on the back of the shirt one more time…“We PLAY for those who came before… We SET THE STANDARD for those who follow.” It was then that I felt inspired, standing in a space that honors our school’s past while looking out onto a bright future. #AlwaysACharger
